Sheila Hicks: 50 Years at ICA Philadelphia
Hicks is a multi-disciplined fiber artist based in Paris. She studied painting at Yale in the 1950’s under Joseph Albers and took up weaving while traveling and working in Mexico after graduation. She applies her skill with fiber to the art discipline she learned at Yale. The results are fiber-based installations at a large architectural scale. Her art practice is rooted in the Bauhaus discipline of investigation and discovery of the possibilities of a material and technique. Three rooms are filled with studies and sketches of these patient, systematic searches that demonstrate mastery over each material and technique. From these she develops new techniques for small pieces that become modules on which the spectacular large-scale installations are based.
There is a lot to learn from Sheila Hicks: 50 Years, now on view at ICA through August 7, 2011.
